Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN)with the Lunar New Year round the orner, Chinese around the orld are reparing to elcome the Year of the Dog.

But in Malaysia, where eople of ethnic Chinese escent make up lmost a quarter of the population, mages of the og have been omitted from Lunar New Year ecorations and merchandise for ear of offending the ountry’s Muslim majority.

The omission has aised hackles in the Chinese ommunity and caused concern mong Malaysians of ll aiths, who ee it as yet nother ymptom of the ountry’s rowing Islamic conservatism, driven by the overnment’s flirtation with hardline Islamist olicies and a cultural hift by eligious students eturning from the Middle East.
